Flights

Most flights from North America arrive at either Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (sometimes also called Fiumicino) or Milano’s Malpensa Airport. In both Rome and Milano, you can rent a car or find rail service from the airport to Stazione Termini in Rome or Stazione Centrale in Milan, where trains regularly depart for Firenze (Florence). Also, European carriers serve Pisa and Florence, both of which are good choices for Villa Montalbino. We may be able to arrange an airport pickup in Florence.

Directions for Traveling By Train

If you’re arriving in Villa Montalbino by train, you can arrange with us pickups and dropoffs at Empoli train station (22 kilometers away). Empoli is on the main line going west from Florence to Pisa, Livorno, and Siena, and is about a half hour from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station on a diretto (direct train). Trains depart very frequently.

The Certaldo train station is closer to Villa Montalbino (12 kilometers), but trains are less frequent. Unless you are coming from Siena, Empoli will be the easier journey.

Trains from Rome (Termini station) to Florence (Santa Maria Novella station) are very frequent. If you book a high speed train (sometimes called ‘Intercity’ or ‘Eurocity’), the journey takes only 96 minutes. From Rome’s airport, there are shuttle trains to Rome Termini station. If arriving at a different Italian airport, ask us for advice.

Please visit ITALIA RAIL for complete timetables.

Car Rentals

Due to the Villa’s location in the countryside, we strongly recommend that retreat participants rent at least one car. We will provide all participants with contact information well ahead of time so that those wishing to share a car rental can make arrangements. Car rentals can be reserved through all the major travel sites, such as Expedia. We recommend adding insurance coverage, or using a credit card that provides primary coverage in Italy. Your personal coverage may not apply overseas.

Make sure to use directions in conjunction with maps. We suggest purchasing an international data plan that will allow you to use maps on your mobile device. If you prefer to purchase a road atlas, make sure it’s detailed enough to show small country roads. We recommend atlases published by Touring Club Italiano or De Agostini.
